Well, if you’re on a tight deadline for delivering an ambient/experimental/IDM album, and you’re totally out of money (and even possibly ideas), good news. You’re saved. Tim Exile just released S L O W, for free.
To those who don’t know him, Mr. Exile is a professional mad scientist specializing in Reaktor engineering, virtuoso laptop musicinator, electronica personality, and man about town. Tim’s exploits are widely known and buzzed about among nerds and sonic weirdos, but since they won’t reach everyone’s ears that way, he also has a mailing list. Signing up for said mailing list is your key to unlocking the treasure trove of S L O W. (Spaces reproduced here in deference to Mr. Exile’s branding wishes.)
Synthetic reverbs often use series of delays to do their work. The trick to S L O W is adding more delay lines – like, lots more delay lines.
The result is a wash of events, one you can separate into a series of reverbs or squash together to create shimmering reverberation. You’ve likely heard experimental effects like this before, but Tim’s made them really easy and accessible.
There’s an interesting and unusual trigger for this, too – not just making fun noises, but pondering data. Tim writes:

Earthquaker devices have a few pedals that do a very similar thing. (Afterneath, Avalanche run, transmissor)
Sounds awesome, but not super practical for everyday use.
Installed it and ran it. Input but no output. My R6 programming skills are pretty elementary, so I’m not seeing anything obvious in the ensemble that is broken… Oh well. I’ll use something else.

At the beginning it pleases you, I mean the sound and toys/tools of Reaktor and/or Ableton….after a while one realizes that the sound comes out of these boxes are all coloured in a certain way….after a while it gets boring….feels like everything….I mean every sound comes out has this sticky stuff on it….I refuse to use Reaktor or Ableton……there are other tools probably with lesser functions and gleam etc. but sounds neutral and clean thus one does not lose the interest in music itself because those tools does not change the original sound of things….was a bit off topic but anyway….important issue
I know what you mean and, yes, important issue.
But I can say that the colouration disappeared for me with Reaktor 6. That was the biggest bonus with the paid upgrade. Suddenly everything just sounds… as it should.
(Not a comment on this reverb. Just a general point.)
I’m not too keen on running an effect within another plugin within my DAW — Inception hurts my brain. So this is just a long reverb, right? Anyone tried to do this with native effects yet?
Cool. Looks like he just doubled the diffusion networks Martijn built in the Space Master reverb. So it’s basically Space Master without some of the shelving EQ’s and twice the decay time. Still such a great sound.
