None other than Surgeon, going by his forum handle youknowiloveyou (we love you, too, man!), walks through his live set one module at a time on the Muff Wiggler forums. Image attached. And you can watch the full performance video via Boiler Room at the Netherlands’ lovely Dekmantel Festival. Read the full discussion here for details:

Surgeon Boiler Room x Dekmantel Festival DJ + Modular set

It’s a nice who’s who of creative modules, from Mutable’s innovative Braids to musical sound sculpting options from Make Noise.

And without taking a stand on modular itself, this is the sort of playing I like to see – far from getting, um, tangled in noodling, Surgeon’s sets are nimble, danceable, and visceral. And here’s Boiler Room performing a valid public service: this is one video you do actually want to watch. (I’ve been lucky to catch him in the flesh, but even there couldn’t look over his shoulder this easily.)

Thanks to Stephan Koller for the tip.

And if you’d like to share how you play, you don’t have to be a legend – or you don’t have to be a legend yet. Just get in touch.

Edited: This post somewhat embarrassingly suggested this thread was taking place “right now.” This being the Internet, of course, “now” can include archival content; the thread was concurrent with the video. And part of the beauty of modular is that the rig can change, though I believe I saw something close to this setup.

Am I missing something, or is this video and the thread on Muff’s nearly a year old?

still an excellent Surgeon set and cool thread, even if it’s not quite new.

Yeah, remove my embarrassing use of the word “now” and it’s still useful information.

Glad that you give the chance of viewing this very fine piece of boilerroomery and techno set to some guys, including me, who did not watch it, nor noticed it, at the time of its release last year.

Whatever the delay in posting it to CDM, or any other site, if this is a good DJ set, it will stand the test of time and we will still be able to see it with wonder in 10 years time.

Sorry Peter, I wasn’t trying to be critical. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing out on any new information on Surgeon’s modular. Both this techno set and the ambient modular set he did: https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=117793 are awesome. Thanks for the great blog, I read every day.

      • Peter Kirn says:

        heh, yes — oops.

here we go, *another* instance where comments are useful.

Uh, well I am usually ok with provacative stuff, but everyone has a point where they feel some offense- and the Burzum shirt offends me. It’s just my opinion, but I can understand and tolerate the old punk use of the swastika at that time- because the symbol itself was provacative and the punk appropriation of it had a kind of deliberate shock value that I think was intended by enough of them to devalue the symbol. I guess I could even see myself buying a used Burzum record to experience it- but for me, he might as well be wearing an Ed Gein tshirt. Actually that’s not a good example because Gein didn’t spout off a bunch of racist and hateful comments and double down on them like Burzum did. Not to mention the murder and his recent history. Maybe a Skrewdriver tshirt is a better analogy. Sorry if this isn’t more clear- there’s nuance in what he did and I hope nuance comes thru in my reaction, but- man- it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Maybe I’ll get flamed, but I think its worth discussion- and I’m willing to engage on it- despite the can of worms this might open.

I’m from a border area in Texas and an old high school acquaintance was wearing a Burzum tshirt on a visit last year, and when we discussed it he seemed to have thought it thru- still into extremes. But at a Boiler room performance? Performed with what looks like a heavily caucasian crowd?

Really problematic. I’m most definitely rambling, but well- this stuff isn’t clear cut. Maybe part of my perspective is hypocritical- but know Burzums history and his racist mouthing off- as a minority, Mexican for full disclosure- i can just say that if I was at this show, I’d feel pretty uncomfortable. What’s the middle ground? Can we call him out on that? Can I say I think its an asshole move without getting the pitchforks out?

    Could we discuss?

This may be neither here nor there, but I remember seeing Laibach in Texas around ’89-90 as an early teen- and seeing skinheads that didn’t get the nuance. Same with KMFDM shows that flirted with fascist imagery. Do the Mussolni Headkick actually had a spin on this.

In the end it’s just a tshirt, and maybe just a poor choice- but definitely a poor choice for Boiler Room with its broadcast range.

Okay, I’ve written enough- anyone want to have a civilzed discussion about this?

Oh dear, I’m going to have to rethink my life now. Peter, sorry for starting a flame war. I think I’m done. In light of my missing the Bambi joke feel free to edit or whatever. CDM doesn’t need to be sullied with this kind of stuff.

        • Peter Kirn says:

Apologies, I was slow with the edits.

But then, when you delete these couple of off-color comments, I think this is *still* an illustration why comments are useful.

          “Whoa, that isn’t??!”
          “no, it isn’t.”
          “ah, good.”

Discussing things is useful. I may add some other folks moderating, as we get a lot of comments. 90% of them are useful; maybe 20% very useful. About 1% need moderation.

I’m glad you raised it because I was about to and I hadn’t seen the Bambi bit either. As a non-white who’s been an electronic musician for the last 33 years, I’ve dealt with so much racism in the scene it’s depressing. Even more so when you consider how many pioneers of the scene are black, Jewish, Latinx or whatever.

So, props to you, Adrian, it cheered me up to see you’d spoken out! 🙂

Art is independent of the moral quality of its creator. Once created it has a life of its own. A lot of artists are not nice people. The BURZUM/BAMBI shirt is a critique of black metal imagery, not an endorsement of racism.

Okay- apparently it’s a Bambi Burzum shirt- really hard to tell. Consider me trolled. Still- can’t make out the Bambi. Okay some layers here, and maybe he shouldn’t have to worry about camera angles, but it still comes across as a Burzum advertisement. But still lots to unpack here. Maybe thats a good thing, maybe not. Move on, nothing to see here other than the prominent Burzum logo.
