It seems synth guru Richard Devine couldn’t resist revealing something about upcoming Yamaha technology. In an interview earlier this month, he let slip that the instrument includes “alien” new tech:

Usually when I work with a company – for instance I’m working with Yamaha on a project right now; I can’t say what it is, but it’s pretty crazy. This synthesizer has new technology that’s never been implemented before, so it’s totally alien to anything I’ve ever used. I’ve had to spend a few weeks just understanding the architecture of it.

This tells us two things. One, whatever Richard is working on is now almost certainly digital at least in large part; there’s a whole lot more you can do in the digital realm than the analog realm, at least as far as “new.” (It could be he’s talking about something to do with the form factor, but since he mentioned architecture here and he’s presumably doing sound content for them, that’s unlikely.)

Two, we’re now officially 1000% more interested than we were before, because Richard Devine – for those of you who don’t know him – has used a lot. The man is an obsessive-compulsive sound designer on the Rain Man order of productivity.

The whole interview is worth a read, whether you’re into what Yamaha is teasing or not:

RICHARD DEVINE: RETAINING MASTERY OF MACHINES IN THE FACE OF THE SINGULARITY

And, uh, Yamaha, please don’t hurt Rich over this story. All PR is good PR.

Thanks to Joey Blush, another great modular synth instrumentalist, for the catch. He’s at:

Updated: a source (not Richard) tells CDM that the project he’s describing isn’t Reface. Wait, now that’s very interesting, indeed.

guaranteed to sound like the same gurgled mess Richard made a career out of, or at least the wack ass presets he’s gonna dump into it

IDM wank belongs in the bedroom, not on press releases, otherwise it betrays the whole premise (https://www.marxists.org/glossary/terms/d/i.htm)

Richard, I’m callin you out boy, you’re fine when you don’t pretend to be complicated and just make corny bangers like randale, but if you wanna go toe to toe with a certified IDM goblin like me then your clown ass is going down, post one bloopy sample and I’ll cornhole you 10 ways from sideways, no gear no plugins, just straight up digital manboy getting clobbered, put up a email or dropbox and lets throw down, forreal forreal

there is no IDM but DSP and lexaunculpt is it’s prophet (peace be upon him)

My prediction is: a powerful FM synth, but this time with a completely rethought (refaced?) approach to the UI, hopefully making it more accessible. I could see a completely different way of controlling FM syntheses as being “alien”.

    • Polite Society says:

That was my first impression as well from the promo video, but surely Devine is pretty familiar with FM and wouldn’t take a few weeks to get his head around that concept.

    • Xebulon says:

I would LOVE a knobby hardware version of Ableton Operator.

      • just passing says:

I don’t think FM really lends itself to easy hardware programming either – unless it’s TX81z-style FM, with a minimised number of parameters. In fact, I think that’s why analogue synthesis does lend itself to hardware: Full and comprehensible control of a rather nice sound engine with fewer than two dozen sliders; and there are almost no wrong turns in subtractive synthesis – at least, not in the same way as there are in FM.

    • Potted Plant says:

I envision alien FM control utilizing neuro-phase modulation of strange attractors.

      • Laurie Curry says:

check the synth inside the continuum… it contains patch points made of algebra… and the boggling filter banks…

lot.” …. Ummmm. No. The polar opposite is true, because it is more
accurate to say that Devine has ENDORSED a lot. He is a music industry
shill of the highest order, he has done more than anyone else to reduce
the currency of his words to the value of my dog’s last bowel movement.
That Richard Devine endorses this new product means *nothing* … in
fact, it probably works against it. When you seek out an endorsement
shill like Devine for praise that is the equivalent of clutching at
straws. The best I can hope for, with a Devine endorsement, is ‘meh’

    • Peter Kirn says:

I know Richard reasonably well. I mean, he’s prone to a lot of enthusiasm. None of us ever agrees on what’s cool or not. That’d be dull.

I don’t think this deserves *quite* this much hate.

All bets are off once the thing ships. Relax. Also… we don’t need that much dog poop imagery; I live in Berlin, so get plenty of the real thing.

    • Mr Pickle says:

Geez, what’s with all this RD-hate? Did he steal your lunch money on the way to school?

As luck would have it, I met Richard Devine the weekend before last at NMASS here in Austin. Had a nice conversation with him before and after his set (during which, BTW, he delivered). He’s a nice guy, very approachable. I believe that you do him a considerable dis-service calling him a “shill” – he’s an enthusiast and performer who has a personal commitment to advancing the industry, and he’s in the (enviable) position where he gets access to a lot of the latest and greatest bleeding edge technology, and (bonus) he wants to tell people about the cool stuff he works with. You can call him a shill if you like, but I think of him as “a guy that I can learn a lot from”.

Yeah, it’s not like I’ve known him for years. Back at the hotel maybe he transformed into Dr. Evil and amused himself feeding room-service staff to his pet shark. But I’m a reasonably good judge of people, and IMNSHO “RD” means “Real Deal”.

      • Peter Kirn says:

Yeah, exactly. I mean, you don’t have to like all his music.

I don’t even always like all my own music. 😉

        • Freeks says:

Offtopic, but it’s important step to better producer to not like all own music. For some people it take years, some still don’t get it 😀

      • Freeks says:

Is still ok to say that if RD endorses something it has no much value these days? I mean it’s hard to find VSTi that does not RD “sound” he is sound designer for many products. That does not make the products any better.

And if RD says it’s complicated, then it’s way beyond our undestanding 🙂

But him endorsing Rhythm Wolf bass synth is funny. Maybe it’s sound designers dream to have crappy bass tone that can’t be tuned 😀

I personally don’t like he’s music, but i do use some of he’s presets on some weirder things. He is good sound designer.

I’m all in for mini keys with Lately Bass 😀

    • chaircrusher says:

      You’re being a troll.

I’ve known Rich for close to 20 years, and your impression of him is 180 degrees wrong. He does sound design for new software and hardware; to call that ‘shilling’ is ridiculous. For the record I don’t think he’s ever endorsed anything for money; he’s done work for hire with gear & software manufacturers.

      • Goatboy says:

you’re entitled to your opinion. It’s interesting that those here whose opinion is to the contrary all have one thing in common … they ‘know’ him or have met him, and he’s a nice guy. I’m sure he’s a nice guy. I’m not saying he not a nice guy. I’m saying through his constant ringing endorsements of multitudes of plugins and devices, he has reduced the currency of his words to dogshit.

        But I’m sure he’s a good guy.

        • just passing says:

Well, I couldn’t pick Richard Devine or his work out of a line-up, so when I tell you that you’re being an abject arsehole, please take it as an entirely objective opinion, unswayed by any consideration of the target of your asshattery.

          • Goatboy says:

here he is shilling for Akai … this time singing the praise of the Rhythm Wolf. A turd if ever there was one. Check out all the features he ‘loves’ and sound ‘great’ and a list of other far-too-generous adjectives. He’d endorse smallpox if he thought someone would quote him on it.

it’s the definition of commodification, but in this case a commodification of sound, a sound of the past that promised me cool 90s hacker shit, but now the sound is no longer about subversion, it’s about buying products

my problem is that i used to have asect:dsect and now im the equivalent of a dude who had a jordan rudess record

            it’s embarrassing for everybody involved

          • Space Captain says:

Of course it’s about buying products. You do realize this is is about companies selling musical instruments. Not sure what you are wanking on about. He is a hired programmer and his experience in using gear makes him valuable to companies. What is your value?

I don’t always like his music or what he supports but his opinions have more merit than yours. One thing that you can always be sure of is that RD will push whatever he is using into directions most people don’t. This is his JOB – what he is paid for. What do you do? Sit in basements and criticize people who are being paid to do what they want to be doing. Hurts so much, doesn’t it.

          • cretin fuckwad says:

Won’t be surprised if Yamaha announces the Montage at Winter NAMM, 2016; at the latest, around Summer NAMM, 2016.
