There’s a high-bandwidth cable connecting that iPad or iPhone to your Mac. And yet … and yet, until recently, music apps treated that very connection as an impossible-to-cross canyon.

No more.

We already took a look at midimux, a tool that makes everything that speaks MIDI on an iOS gadget available to your Mac, and visa versa. That’s already cool. You can use a keyboard controller plugged into your Mac to play a soft synth on your iPad. You can sequence an instrument on your computer from an iPad step sequencer, with touch control. Hardware and desktop software and apps all work. This also means controller apps no longer need to use fidgety wireless connections. So long as they support MIDI, you can use a cable. (That’s important, as I’ve found ad-hoc networking has recently gotten even more unreliable – to use OSC, I’ve taken to carrying around a standalone wifi router.)

But it’s when you put MIDI together with audio that things get really interesting. In an exclusive first look, CDM gets the scoop on a video demo showing how it all works. (Okay, it’s an exclusive first look because I spent yesterday nagging the developers to shoot it and wouldn’t leave them alone until it was done. You’re welcome. And, uh — sorry, guys.)

With audiomux, you can pipe sound digitally in both directions between the Mac and iOS, with no loss in fidelity. That means you can finally take some interesting bits you’re working on in an iPad drum machine or synth or soundmaker and immediately pipe them into a session in your DAW – no futzing about with extra cables and interfaces. And you can go the other direction, too, making an iPad or iPhone a powerful mobile recording device for sampling or taking audio on the go or recording live or DJ sets.

audiomux

There are other competing efforts to do the same thing as you see here – the basic underlying frameworks that make audiomux and midimux possible are available to everyone. But so far, I haven’t seen anything as complete as this solution. (MIDI LE, for instance, is cool and free, but it only offers comparatively limited connectivity.) The people behind midimux and audiomux are the same talented developers behind the likes of touchAble.

And there are few disadvantages to using audiomux. Audio is extremely low latency. Audiobus compatibility means a whole host of apps become instantly inter-connected. And if you have more than one iOS gadget, each becomes a separate audio device, making a little studio of Apple stuff.

In each case, you only need the app on the device, plus a free server for Mac.

midimux is available now – it landed on the App Store this week:
midimux @ iTunes App Store

There’s good news about backwards compatibility for midimux, too. It works with iOS 5 and later devices and all the way back to Mac OS X 10.6. That means that this app could save older iOS gadgets from being discarded, by turning them into useful MIDI tools.

audiomux is currently awaiting Apple approval. It’s requirements are necessarily more stringent, but the developers are still supporting systems back to iOS 7 and OS X 10.7.

Individually, they’re US$9.99, but when audiomux becomes available you’ll be able to get the bundle for $14.99.

Scratch that! Price drop!

Buy midimux now at US$9.99, and get audiomux free.

US$9.99 for the bundle once audiomux is out. (Or U$6.99 for each individually.)

Between Bluetooth LE and now this, I’m already giving my 2+ and 4+ the side eye.

Well, if this comes in as a separate device, do we need to create and aggregate audio device that will include the iDevice along with whatever audio interface I’m already using, or does this work differently somehow? If you need to add it to an aggregate audio device, then maybe it makes more sense to keep using your iConnectivity box. Then again, I’m still on 10.6.8 Maybe they have done away with aggregate audio device now in later versions of OSX.

      • Christian Blomert says:

I think this depends on the DAW in question and if it allows choosing different devices for in- & output. In Ableton Live for example it is possible to choose your normal audio interface as the output, and the device created by audiomux as the input. This way you can record from the iPad while outputting everything via the standard interface. If you want to record via the standard audio interface too, i think aggregate devices are still the best choice.

I can only speak about 10.8-10.10 at the moment, but aggregate devices are still there and working perfectly for us – also between several iDevices and a typical audio interface.

Personally in most cases I’ll still want/need to use the iConnectMIDI 4+ because I’d really like to be sending audio from my Mac to my iPad, processing it, and then sending audio and BACK to the Mac and then sending it out to physical outputs. If I use one of these app solutions, then I would be setting the app as my output from Live to process audio…yet I would still need to be sending audio to my speakers to hear it… this would mean I’d have to create an aggregate audio device. Creating an aggregate audio device is basically a non-starter for me: every attempt I’ve made at using them introduced so much latency to system that it simply wasn’t worth it.

As I understand it, the iConnectMIDI 4+ would avoid this by appearing as one audio interface to the Mac. It would take care of the routing to and from the iOS device itself… so in Live I would simply be selecting multiple outputs from ONE audio interface (one to my physical outputs to my speakers and one to my iPad for processing). That said, this is only one scenario and, I haven’t actually used the iConnectMIDI audio/MIDI interface yet….but I am fairly sure that it enables physical audio I/O and virtual audio I/O (to/from ios devices) to be defined as being from one interface.

            Great! That’s good news.

It would probably be a good idea to include an idle time preference which would automatically kill the server if no user input is received for n minutes, so people who forget to quit the server and try to update their iOS don’t brick their iPads. Unless you’ve solved the bricking issue, which would be ideal of course.

          • Christian Blomert says:

yes! the bricking issue is fixed completely, so it’s more about convenience now
the updated server stays on – and comes back on – as long the user does not quit, once he does it will stay off till launched again. this way it’s always on for those who want, and start/stoppable when needed. it’s the same deal for midimux btw 🙂

          • Charles says:

But thx to your work i can sit here and still be informed. And kudos to the devs aswell for dropping in on the comment section to clarify the bundle-options as this was the next big thing we’re all interested in. It is really nice to see dedicated people pushing the bundaries and bringing the ios-platform a big leap forward in maturity and possibilitys to integrate it in a decent way in our existing rigs/studio-setups!! <3!

Hey peter, thx a lot for your initiative.. especially for interested folks who aren’t living in the berlin-area. I wouldnt call that nagging rather than ‘proactive-user-interest’. ;b I was close to dropping by they’re office on my own, if it werent for my last minute work-schedule! Two questions:

    – What are the best options for connecting the iPad to a Mac? Will standard lightning-to-USD cable suffice?

    – Is wireless an option with this setup?

I’ve only used the iPad via wireless – the latency gets a little annoying if it’s very time-sensitive MIDI input, but for more gradual movements or cilp-firing a la Touchable, it works great?

“But so far, I haven’t seen anything as complete as this solution.”

Check out the recently released ‘Music IO: MIDI over USB’. As far as I can tell, it offers pretty much the same features as midimux, but at a much lower price point. (I suspect that is the reason why audiomux will now be free for those of us who have already paid €9.99 for midimux.) Music IO too will gain audio-over-USB capability in a future update (within the same app, AFAIK.)

Have not tested it yet, so I don’t know how it compares.

iOS is growing up. Looks like a great way to implement your Ipad. Might even be worth upgrading to a faster one.

I’m excited by the potential here but I’ve noticed that when I use the USB connection between my Mac and ipad I get significantly more noise from the ipad than when I use a USB midi interface and an ik midi interface to the ipad. Connecting the ipad directly to the computer seems to add lots of odd digital noise. Anyone else having these issues?

Now, audiomux is out but the price on iTunes is 6,99 even though I purchased midimux for 9,99. Didn’t you say it was free then?
