Max 7 is the newest version of Cycling ’74 visual development to… um… erm…
Well, actually, it’s really hard to explain what tools like Max, Pd, Reaktor, Plogue Bidule, and the like can do. Sure, they’re nerdy environments for making stuff. But because they’re open ended – because what they do is really up to you – just calling them a “development tool” doesn’t really say a lot.
So, in a cute new video, Cycling ’74 shows off Max 7. It’s really stuff you could do with previous tools, showing visual and sonic capabilities. But if you didn’t fully grasp why that’s cool, maybe a singing mushroom will help. And long-time Max users will see that Max 7 has a very different UI – even if Max 5/6 themselves offered a lot of changes. Tools are in a trendy gray on the borders around the window, always handy, and there’s a new browser. No new objects are immediately obvious that I can spot, but I know there’s a lot more to Max 7 than that. I’ll try to see if Cycling wants to help a CDM out a bit with that information, but I’m pretty sure they’re being coy.
Certainly, I hope Max 7 also coincides with the next Max for Live and that those are in sync, too. I’ll find out for us when they’re ready to reveal that.

Pretty disappointed in this video – I’m not sure that Max’s intended audience should be complete newbies; but the UI looks intriguing. Not unlike those OLPC XO computers.
As a teacher, I’ve taught both Max and Pd (and Processing, and other things) to complete newbies. So… why not? Isn’t that where we all start? And isn’t Max effectively a blank slate?
You can make a very effective but very simple patch in Max and have it be useful.
You’re absolutely right; my phrasing was bad. The video just really struck me as strange. It doesn’t answer the question of what Max is for new folks, it doesn’t tease new features in 7, and I didn’t find it as funny as they seem to.
I’m also hoping it debuts with M4L integration.

Agreed David. I watched it as a consequence of being on a Cycling ’74 forum mailing list. I didn’t find it amusing in the least and I am still shaking my head as to why they would throw away an opportunity to promote their revised product in a meaningful way. Now this video is making the rounds as “News” on high traffic music blog and news sites.

At first glance the two keyboard modules appear to be tracking incoming pitch. Maybe something of an extension of sigmund~ or fiddle~ or pitch~? I’m definitely interested to see what direction that is headed. I hope the videos that follow offer us a bit more info about the actual product. This video would have probably been better to save for after release. People that are unaware of Sam T might get the wrong idea from this more or less wtf presentation.

Yeah, I’m not in *love* with this particular video – I’m hungry to know more, and maybe there are even better ways to explain to newcomers what Max is.
But I agree. It’s a teaser. Obviously there’s more to come. As a teaser, it seems fine.
Incidentally, of course, 100% of people never like what you do. Most of the response outside comments has been positive.
So anyone that weren’t turned on by this video, don’t worry – there’s more to come.

i learned like 70% of my max knowledge from Sam´s tutorials and hold them in high regards.
he has a different approach in explaining things and this video pretty much sums it up 🙂
anyway, i hope max 7 get´s easier to patch ith every release and that he keeps on doing his tutorials.

Brilliant video. I don’t know why people are down on it…it seems the easier the programming environment the more seriously people feel they need to take themselves. Just because Max makes brilliant things easy you can still chill out! Looking forward to 7.
