REUNION. an extreme short film from Nils Clauss on Vimeo.

Nils Clauss has shared his cinematography and editing in collaboration with Korean director Jee Hyunsuk, and they’re simply gorgeous. Each a one-minute visual verse, shot entirely on a Canon 5D MK II SLR, the pieces are to me witty and moving.

They’re a reminder that the current device best able to make short videos remains … well, the camera, perhaps supplanting even the dedicated video camera. Digital videography on cameras is spoiling us with its levels of expression, leaving the artistry to the operator.

The ability of cinema to be miniaturized in this fashion has particular implications for live cinema and VJing, itself a kind of microscopic cinema.

It’s well worth a visit to Nils Clauss’ full portfolio, which show off his eye for still composition and color – elements well utilized in these films, too – via works in photos, films, and print. (Clauss describes himself as a German photographer/cinematographer based in Seoul.)

Am about to grab a 550D/T2i (7D's consumer brethren) and a kit for doing some video work myself. Nice timely videos to reinforce my decision to purchase!
