SunVox, the quirky and cool modular music creation software, already runs on a ton of platforms. Starting now, most of those platforms can run the tool for free. (The one exception: iPhone/iPad.)
That means you get a rich music creation environment that can run on everything from an ancient PDA to a desktop computer, complete with FM, virtual analog, and sample-based synths, effects, modular routing, musical arrangement, and even tracker-level detailed editing, all for free. SunVox works on Mac, Windows, and Linux, plus mobile platforms Palm, Windows Mobile, and iPhone. In fact, it’s an ideal choice to resurrect one of the now-nearly-worthless yet still-very-powerful used PDA devices. Seriously: hit auction and used sites or ask someone for a device, or perhaps search your own closet, and you have an extra music-making device that costs you nothing. (I’ve heard some arguments about the iPad and value, and ditto $300 or $400 netbooks, but I’d like to see the iPad or new netbook compete with $20 or free.)
That said, if you do own an iPhone or iPod touch, SunVox is a no-brainer at US$4.99.
And developer Alex Zolotov tells CDM he’s submitting an iPad version of SunVox for Apple’s new platform, as well, plus working on new features. Stay tuned.
This program is fun and funky. even just using it as a mono synth on the keys of my old treo.

SunVox is such a cool app. At $5 for the iPhone version, it's a steal, and you can't beat free for half a dozen other platforms. It's the only tracker available for iPhone OS, to boot. Definitely looking forward to the 1.5 update.
Ooh, there's a new one on the way? (The fact that it's now free doesn't bother me so much, because I bought it when it was cut to $10 last year for my Zodiac. But it's cool for everyone who didn't, I guess.)
Actually, the one thing that would really excite me is MIDI input on those platforms which support it.
Its a great little program. I love the modular design. My only issue and i have this with all trackers is that hex kills me, it just takes the fun out of it for me.
I did buy it and promptly lose it in a HD crash so methinks I should give it another shot. Especially since i can throw it on my work laptop and have a bit of fun time on my lunch hour.
The only tracker? Have you seen iSequence?

Sure. My criterion for comparison: Lets me edit the same songs on Windows, Linux and PalmOS.
SunVox: yep.

Just bought it. Good for making chiptunes :).. user interface is a nightmare!
too bad it only supports wav files. as a long time mac user, almost all my samples are aif. sure i could batch convert 30 gb with peak but… nah.
@gwenhwyfaer Good point. Sadly, Sunvox is one of the few iPhone apps that provides a true roundtrip workflow. Other than iDrum, I don't even know of any others.

Hey Peter, Can Sunvox save as .it files? as a tracker it looks great, I need to export some .it files for iPhone app, i'd love to use this, I have not had much time to dive down into its guts and see what it does, is it worth going down that rabbit hole?
