recordrack

Given the passion of the debate, it’s easy to forget that Propellerheads’ Record has been firing up discussion from many people who haven’t actually seen it. Record is to audio recording, mixing, and mastering what Reason is to synthesized sound, and for Reason lovers, it finally delivers that holy grail – multiple racks. Record is a bit like Reason Studio, taking those instruments and giving them a full production context.

Since its release, Propellerhead has amplified polarized opinions about this tool. It doesn’t support plug-ins (though you can use other ReWire clients), it doesn’t do things like film scoring, and thus its singular focus on recording means I think it’s fair for Propellerhead to say it’s not a DAW. Of course, going so far as tell blogs they can’t label it as such is going a bit far, and it only made some people protest more. And the focus on those features hasn’t pleased users who want everything and a kitchen sink on their feature list. Users were divided over the Ignition Key and online authorization scheme (see full explanation), of course.

But it is something about which everyone seems to have an opinion, and for that alone, I love it. That’d be a little more fair if you’ve actually gotten to use it, however. So, now’s your chance to try Record for yourself:

http://www.propellerheads.se/products/record/

The beta is a full-featured, open-and-save-capable version, through its expiration date on September 9.

If you’re impatient, we can get you the beta key right now. Just leave a comment, say something intelligent, say “+1 beta,” and be sure to leave your real email address. (Emails are not published on the site; I’ll just see them in my inbox.) If you’d like to be on the CDM Notes mailing list (no other marketing or spam), say “+1 email.”

All out! Thanks to everyone; hopefully we’ve gotten everyone a code who wanted one. Follow comments for some little glitches with their Website…

Once you’ve got a reply from me, download Record by entering your code at http://recordyou.com. You’ll also get two codes to pass along to friends.

Update on registration: I talked to Propellerhead’s web developer – when you get the confirmation email for recordyou.com, go ahead and log in! You’ll be confirmed automatically. Some people saw this login page following the confirmation email and thought something was wrong. Don’t worry, log in, and everything will be fine.

We’ll give out keys until we run out. Propellerhead shared some with us, but then composer Josh Mobley, whose work is featured in Record and has been an advocate of the software from the beginning, reached out. Josh gave us half his stash of keys to share with CDM readers, because he’s devoted to Propellerhead’s stuff. How devoted? He has a Reason tattoo. And it’s nice to hear that Record is pleasing a Reason fan, as that to me remains the big test. Josh has done some significant commercial work, ranging from NBC’s The Office to Ford Motors to the US Department of Defense, with scoring, music, sound design, remix, and environmental projects.

http://www.joshmobley.com/

And he’s a superfan in the best way. I asked him why Record matters in his work:

I love me some Reason. In fact, I love it so much, I got a tattoo on my wrist of the Reason logo. Most people thought I was out of my mind but I love it. Why? Things really didn’t start taking off for me until I started using Reason. I took one look at the program and thought, they made this for me. I started busting out tunes faster than I ever had before. And people were snatching them right up. It dawned on me right then and there that this self-contained environment had freed me up and allowed me to be creative without scrolling through a bunch of plug-ins and whatnot. The distractions of making music were gone. A limited tool set that can be routed and combined in an infinite number of ways. One needs only to look at the patches and music that [Reason user] peff is making to see that reason is the most powerful music instrument in the world.

And now, we have Record: Audio+Reason+SSL Mixer. Having used it since the early alphas, I can honestly say that Record is every bit as musical and easy to use as Reason. The time stretching is, frankly, jaw-dropping. The new mixer sounds like the SSL at my old studio. You can easily do a whole song in Record without any other software. However, Record+Reason is a lethal Combination.

I could go on and on, but at the end of the day, you really need to spend some time with this program and see what’s possible. I can almost certainly guarantee that you will be making music faster than you ever did.

Photo: Josh Mobley.

Now, a superfan is not a fanboy. Fanboys, as we know, are the folks who get defensive even in the face of some obvious shortcoming, who spend lots of their time talking down other people’s choices. The superfans I’m guessing are generally too busy actually using their software – in this case, making music.

And if you do find software you love enough to tattoo on your wrist (see also our friend Jo with Reaktor), you don’t need any reviewer or forum commenter or expert or anyone else to tell you what to think. You’ll know.

Do tell us what you think of Record as you use it, and good luck snagging a code.

I've been rewiring Reason to Reaper for quite a while now, because I want to use plugins and record audio. I have mixed feelings about Record. As a long time Reason fan, I'm excited. On the other hand, I'm a little disappointed they didn't go all the way with Record. I'd love to see a Propellerhead style DAW.

  55. WHIV says:

Ok, having tinkered around with this for the past half an hour or so I have a few observations as a live sound engineer and regular Reason + Ableton + occasionally Pro Tools user:

    1) This is a DAW, regardless of what Props tries to say otherwise. It's a limited one, sure, but it's obviously a DAW as soon as you open it. The price of the Reason + Record package for new users is indicative of this.

    2) While Record's interface has a lot of nice things going on (the timeline below the sequencer looks really nice, for instance, and everything is nice and polished looking) it's a perfect illustration of the limitations created by software-as-hardware GUIs. Everything is cluttered and tough to navigate on my Macbook, and seeing this many knobs all at once is a bit overwhelming. Since Prop's isn't going for the pro market with Record, as evidenced by their attempts to paint it as a Not-A-DAW, why would they make it so difficult to use on a smallish laptop or one screen setup?

Worse, I'm not even using 50% of the clutter I'm seeing. Why, for instance, do I need to see all eight sends per track when I'm not using *any* of the sends on several of those tracks? If I'm not using the compressor why does it still show up on the track? Etc. I also see why Reason's rack is exclusively vertical — this shit gets a bit dizzying all zoomed up close with multiple rows of effects and instruments. I hope there's some way to zoom out so you can see more of your rack(s) at once, though I've yet to find that option and don't think Props saw fit to include it.

    3) Running audio through Reason's effects/modular environment is superneatrad. I'm lovin' it.

Granted, I've barely spent any time with the program, but the way I keep going all cross eyed whenever I look at the interface doesn't bode well. Sure, using Reason's modular environment with recorded audio is great, but the interface is making it a pain. Shitloads of knobs make sense on real world mixers, but they amount to needless confusion and clutter when they're inside my laptop.

@Chris: I certainly didn't mean to imply I thought Record was better than Logic, although if you're on Windows it has a distinct advantage. 😉 I think it's apples to oranges, so to speak — and that's good; if all software were alike, that'd be pretty boring, and it's better to have some clear goals and attack them.

hey peter, guess you can give my code to someone else as i just noticed that one needs to be connected to the internet to run the beta. i, being a person who records for living, do not have either my mac or my windows recording machines connected to the internet. i would've thought the reasons for this would have been obvious but here again, this is not for the pros as much as it for the "prosumer" crowd who have no qualms (again, foolishly, IMO) about having their machine be internet connected while working with their DAW.

this kind of sucks as i was actually gonna give this "record" a real chance and see if it could give PT a real run for it's money. oh well…

Okay, we may not be able to accommodate everyone on comments now, just FYI. So now that you're down the list, you may want to just request a code right at:

Of course, we still welcome your comments, so keep those coming. 🙂

Record looks like it will be a great addition to a Reason setup. It looks like with the addition of the mixer modeled after the SSL it will give every track greater attention to detail in terms of Eq'ing and Compression plus it has more sends.

Just looks great and I heard some demo's with Vocals and its amazing.

It seems like propellerheads have a problem with their website.

My code registered fine, I filled out all the forms and received the confirmation email.

Now in this email I have to click on a link to activate my account, but that link takes me to a login page, where I can't login because … my account isn't activated

It also says that I should contact their webmaster to get this fixed, but clicking that link sends me to a 404 page telling me to … contact their webmaster

    *sigh*

so much for a good start

  175. Mezzurias says:

've been using the Record beta for a ehilr. i think its great. The interface threw me off at first (it looked really messy) but once i started splitting thinngs into their own windows then it became a joy to use. I'm currently trying to do a mix in Record to see how easy it is to get into it. I love the fact that the effects are the same ones used in Reason, I understand them and they are easily extensible and easy to use. This is a must buy for me, imo. I'm a Logic user for the most part but I would probably use Record for my final mixes just because the tools are so easy to use.

Ok I managed to activate my account, by jumping through some hoops on the propellerheads website.

Unfortunately I still can't download record. When I go to recordyou.com and I log in, I come to a page with an faq and some video tutorials and the message "login to download record" at the top. The thing is, I am logged in. Clicking that link just brings me to the same page.

I really hope record is better programmed an more userfriendly then their site.

It sort of reminds me of this

  179. lrtitze says:

Well, a day later and still the same kind of problems with no activation of my account. I've sent an email to tech support and will wait another day to see what they say.

Ok, I tried to reregister my beta code and after an hour or so I received a new mail, with a new link and I can now finally download the record beta.

  182. Peter Kirn says:

Okay, everyone above this mark SHOULD have gotten a code. If you haven't, please leave an additional comment. Other than that, I'm cutting it off! Thanks for playing!

As for these technical problems with Propellerhead's site, that's obviously no good! So if you do have problems, please do report that — I'm in touch with the web developer from Propellerhead who is trying to figure out what is going wrong. (Ah… technology.)

  183. Joshua says:

OK – just opened up Record for 10min.

The sound in the demo projects is quite nice. But they are so MASSIVE I have to spend so much time scrolling around on the page to see all the different modules (15" MBP monitor).

Haven't played with Reason for a couple of years. Never really got into something complex with it – so probably I'm just not used to it. But IMHO the whole cord/patch metaphor == clutter in some of these large demo projects.

Should look into the tutorials to try and try again when I have some more time.

  184. Strong!

(Still no luck with my code. Safari now tells me my code is invalid. I'll see if i can find a friend to send me another.)

  187. Erik_Hz says:

Finally took the time to install and play around a bit… Record is a dream-come-true for a Reason user. I finally feel like I can work with Reason and Audio in the same way Ableton allows you to work with it's bundled instruments. Thanks for the opportunity CDM and Joshua.

  188. DeeJaye says:

Ghee, still no luck. Have code but after over 48 hours says my account isn't active.

Sure was looking forward to working with RECORD, too bad I'm moving on to something else now.

Good luck to the rest of ya!

  189. Jnr. Turnstyle says:

Still got no joy with this.

I must say, I was looking forward to testing out Record and am feeling quite glum now that it's seeming close to impossible.

What do I do? What have all of you guys above me done to make it work…?

"Account not yet activated" is all I get after signing into the login screen I get after clicking on the "link to activate my account".

  197. […] December 2nd, 2009 – Have you been on the fence about getting Propellerhead’s Record? Yesterday I complained about Reason’s poor ability to handle recorded audio, and Record is meant to rectify that. It allows you to record your own instruments and mix them just like any other DAW. Just be sure not to call it a DAW though, the Propellerhead guys don’t like that. […]
