Weekend Inspiration returns!

First up, while casually browsing the tubes this week (rather than, yanno, doing work) I stumbled upon this little Youtube video – Psyk by Plastikman – Video by Ali Demirel Magnetmus:

Which reminded me how nice it can be to Keep It Simple Stupid. Sometimes finding and exploring little things can be very rewarding. Working them in depth can be as fulfilling as going apeshit crazy with the effects – and sometimes more so because you can really drive the point home and not loose your focus.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is lots of creative work and cross over between Visualists/VJ performance and coding in the Demoscene world. While im not super familiar with the ins and outs of the community, I stumbled on to http://mac.scene.org/ – a site specifically for Macintosh based demo products. Download a scene or two (if you are on PC or linux, check out the main scene.org site) and prepare for some nice synesthetic effects.

I’d love to know what your favorite well executed ‘simple video’ is, and any amazing demos you may know of. Keep those creative juices flowing.

Edit : updated links/credits – Thanks Douglas and sbn for corrections.

As far as the demoscene goes, 64k and 4k intros are the best place to find creative exploration of simple concepts, due to the format's restrictions. Personally, I'm a sucker for Blasphemy's stylized work like KKowboy and MoralHardCandy, and Tpolm's classic TE-2RB. Take a look at demoscene.tv for the vids.

As fond of memories as I have about the first PC demos I ever saw (Unreal, Second Reality, etc), there are some damn awesome ones that are a bit newer… (all of these are easily found on youtube, too):

assembly 2004 invite by moppi productions
I Feel Like A Computer by melon dezign
    chimera by halcyon
    hplus by halcyon
    Pornonoise – Lunix & mfx
    Track One by Fairlight
    candytron by Farbrausch

and who couldn't like this ode to the "golden age" of the pc demoscene?

Thanks for the links. Your links should go to scene.org and not to demoscene.org, though, the latter appears to be some sort of squatter site.

joe: I remember demos by melon, orange and farbrausch fondly as well.

    Hi,

Just thought I should point out that the track "Psyk" is by Plastikman from the album "Artifakts" and the video is by the long term Hawtin collaborator Ali Demirel, from your post it appears as though someone else has done the brilliant work you've posted…

That said, the track and video are excellent, attribution aside.

    Hey mate,
Some people on VJ Forums asked a few days back about "what kind of visuals does Richie Hawtin like" (Also known as Plastikman for those playing at home) So I posted some info from a pingmag interview he did back in August, very very interesting with more examples of his own (very minimal) artwork and some more youtubes, and he does mention his work with Ali Demirel.

You can see my post here :

which has a link to the original article, hope you find it interesting

As for my favourite simple video clip? It's hard to pick one but I dig Monolake – Linear :

(apoligies if I got that last URL wrong, having strife with youtube lately)

It's my pleasure to be credited here with this video, especially by vade!
Psyk was my first music video experiment that started up a long-time collaboration with Richie Hawtin.
Later when I was invited to give lectures at some multimedia schools, I presented this video as an example of "no-budget, no-production, a well-realized simple idea…"
