Please pass on as many links as you possibly can think of for a beginning VJer who is currently stuck in hospital for a time – lots of time to play and practice and learn through tutorials etc.
any help appreciated.

Excellent question! So, let’s help him out — any suggestions, folks? Heck, it’s worth compiling a list of “rainy day” tutorials we’d all like to work on when any circumstance (long plane flights, etc.) give us some time. Ideas?

Do you have a camera? Make some stop motion animation with odd objects you can find in a hospital. Im sure there's all sorts of cool things to fiddle with. Syringes, tubes, EKG machines. Get out your camera and survey the room.

As far as tutorials, Id say fiddle with a NLE and learn some editing in Final Cut or Avid (or,um, Premier if you really want to), or teach yourself some After Effects. You can go hardcore and teach yourself expressions to make programmable content in AE, which is nice for background layers, alpha channels or wipes.

Or, you can download PD or Max or Quartz Composer, and start to program your own effects.

    Theres tons to do.

    hey Dan!
    wow, you're still there…
    – maybe you've got enough time to learn jitter?
there's also a fair bit you can do with quartz composer (free in osx and worth checking out), including things like sourcing material from the internet…
i haven't done much visuals before, but a quick google found me these potentially useful links: http://www.quartzcompositions.com/ http://music.arts.uci.edu/dobrian/IAP2004/JitterE

Of course there's Processing and the Processing forums, along with the Processing tag on CDMotion, which will give you a bunch of resources.

Cycling74 offers a 30 day fully functional trial of Max/Msp/Jitter. The best way to learn them is with the tutorials available via their site. Really some of the best learning curve tutorials I've ever done.

Timelapse camera on yourself for your entire stay? Or, POV from over your headboard looking out at the doctors and nurses as they tend to you. Think of it as potenital evidence for your future liability claims! Tell them that and they'll be extra good to you.

try isadora. you can find it at http://www.troikatronix.com/izzy-download.html
it is fully functional (you can't save till you pay, but you can screenshot:), not as complex as max/jitter and a lot faster to get you moving into visuals with an interactive twist.

once you dl it, there is a lot of examples to be had and you can always ask people at the forum

    get well soon. ay..

Stop motion stuff with photography is a great time filler and creative as you can break your project into content gather and then after production.

hospitals would have heaps cool objects you can get your hands on, ask your doctor for your head scan or your broken leg x-ray. no need to convince anyone on this fact, – but x-ray and headscans are hot design item to work with. maybe they can email them to you 🙂 even better…

buy pdf book on processing that just came out.. good fun 🙂
