Image-Line’s FL Studio is a huge underground “cult” hit for digital music making. It’s Windows-only, and it seems to get more love from the European press than the US writers for some reason (maybe because Image-Line is stingy with free press copies). But it’s got some great pattern-based features for those of you who like making quick-and-dirty dance music, as well as an elegant set of synths that could appeal to just about anyone.
Here’s what new in the long-awaited FL Studio 6:
New mixer: Bigger, resizable, and with more flexible routing (at long last)
More MIDI controller support including foot-pedal support (very cool, as FL already has some nifty options like out-of-the-box game controller support)
New sampler: DirectWave
New effects: “Morphing” graphic EQ, delay/filter bank, three-band stereo compressor/limiter, new reverb, new “Squeeze” bit reducer slash distortion slash filtering (I’ll, uh, have to see that in action to understand that), visualization, and envelope controller
Sytrus 2 synth in XXL edition (see previous report)
Lots of enhancements including plug-in delay compensation and a better browser
Sounds like a fantastic upgrade to an already-great value. It’s not going to tear me away from Ableton Live, Reason, and my other apps, but I definitely understand the appeal for its devoted fans.
I've been using FLStudio since version 3.5 or so and it just keeps getting better.
It has this association with dance music, but I like its workflow overall, whether I'm doing glitchy IDM in 11/8 time or dark ambient stuff or something in between. I find it easier than working with non-pattern-based sequencers.
I've only had a few minutes to try out the new version. The new mixer took about 2 minutes for me to stop hating it and another 30 seconds to start loving it. 😀
At first I thought the PDC was hacky, labor-intensive and unintuitive — but I soon saw the experimental possibilities.
Sounds great to me! Would love to hear it if you have a link.
And I think not nearly enough credit is given to warping tools so they do things they're not supposed to. I often find distorting a rigid tool to be more creatively inspiring than a blank slate (depending on my mood).
My stuff is mostly up at lotuswire.net 🙂
ok…ive been using fruityloops6 for about a year now, and i know ther is defntly alot more that i could know about making a beat, i still only know how to simply use Fl Studio and create a beat worth listening to, if you want to here what i am capable of go to > ;www.myspace.com/myersproductionz

This program is great you can do all that you need to do on it. I use others as well, but I use this one the most because of how fast and quick you can get a beat or nice groove going, and its not hard to learn.
