How did I miss this? The new Ecler NUO4 (“nuo” / 4), reported in a skratchworx exclusive (with no information available anywhere else — Ecler’s DJ division included) is a mixer-control surface hybrid. From what I can get from the photos and limited description, the four knobs in the center are MIDI-assignable, with some additional MIDI triggers and an A/B tap button. Not only that, but looking at some of the close-ups it appears all the effects controls and faders can be switched between analog hardware mode and MIDI mode.

In other words, this is potentially really revolutionary, a perfect hybrid between analog mixer and MIDI control surface for Traktor/Live/Max/VJing/whatever. (Thanks to yet another anonymous Guest for getting the scoop in comments! Sign a name or something so I can give you credit, folks!) Needless to say, we’ll be watching for NUO4 updates.

Speaking of credit where it’s due, major props to skratchworx, a terrific site devoted entirely to turntablists who have gotten all the major scoops from Musikmesse. Sorry I spelled your name with a “c” instead of a “k” in my first link, guys. Go check out their site, and soon you’ll wax poetic (sorry) just like me.

    isn't this what the a&h xone:92 does?

. . . what looks interesting here is having MIDI/mixer switches on each control (if I'm reading the shots right) so that EACH control can be set to MIDI, or not, or back again, whenever you want. And as far as I know NOTHING does that.

This is the problem with trying to suss this stuff when it's right out of the gate, though — not nearly enough info. So as I said, expect a follow-up. But if I'm right, and if you can easily make any fader/knob BOTH a MIDI controller and an analog mixer control, as opposed to having separate banks, that's something new. Whether it's also revolutionary with music-making — jury is most definitely out.

Both the A&H and this Ecler are now right at the top of my hot list to watch.

o, i goddit. that's certainly a lot more in the way of midi controllers than the xone:92 would offer.

it's such a good time to be a gearwhore =)

Well, to give you a few more details on how the NUO4 works….the center "channel" has 4 knobs which each have turn/push functionality, each one can be switched to one of three functions (that comes to 12), plus a TAP function, as well as 4 more buttons.

These buttons are all reprogrammable via USB, so they can be used with any program…Ableton, Traktor, etc…or any other program you like.

In addition, channels 2 & 3 can also be switched into MIDI mode, which will in turn make these into MIDI controllers themselves (gain, EQ's and faders).

The NUO4 is scheduled to be released in June, so please check ECLER's website for more details!
